Do I need to book?

Yes. It’s is always best to ring up and book your slot, rather than showing up and being disappointed if the lake is busy.

What are the opening times of the lake?

Winter 8.00 am until 5.00 pm
Summer 7.00 am closing can very. Please check before planning your day.
Evening tickets can be arranged.

What payment methods do you take?

We take Cash, Personal Cheque, Visa, Visa Debit, MasterCard, Maestro, Solo and JCB.

What line to use?

This will depend on the time of the year! The normal rule is from November to end of March intermediate line would work best but floating line can also be fished if fish are only down a couple of feet.

April to end of October will mainly be floating lines as fish tend to feed closer to the surface.

What fly should I fish with?

This depends on the time of year. November to end of March it is mainly small lures. Mini Cat whisker, Ace of spades, Montana, Viva, Christmas Tree, Appetiser and Small olive gold heads. In the colder winter months Tadpoles, or any Black or White flies tend to work better.

In the months of April to October, this is when we get in to the exciting part of the season. This is when we get to use the floating line and smaller files. Lures still will work but more fish will be feeding naturally now. The best types of flies to use in these months are P.T.N, Cruncher, Hares Ear, Diawl Bach, Cove Nymph, Blood worm and Buzzers in a verity of colours. CDC Buzzers, Emerging buzzers, Black gnat, Black Wolf, Daddy and Hoppers are also among the trout’s favourites.

What the best conditions to fish in?

Rainbow and Brown trout do not like the heat; some of the best fishing is between November to end of May when water temperatures are at their coolest. The weather is a major factor when fly-fishing. Too hot and the fish become lethargic and cannot be bothered to feed. Once temperatures start to rise in the lake fish will mainly feed in the cool of the mornings and late evenings, this can be very exciting as fish tend to take small flies such as dry fly, buzzers & nymphs.

When we have very heavy rain, the lake can colour up quickly and visibility in the lake will be affected in these conditions. If you want to fish, the best colours to use are black, orange and yellow. These colours will show up against the dirty water and fish can be caught.

A fishing report will be posted on web site every Sunday and is in the local papers every Thursday.

How often is the lake stocked?

The lake is stocked regularly with fish from 4lb to double figure fish. The Lake is stocked every week and when busy can be stocked up to three times a week; fish are always stocked at the end of a working day. This gives time for the fish to settle for the following days fishing.

How deep is the lake?

There is an average of 12ft of water over the lake. Some parts are as shallow as 8ft, and some parts get as deep as 18-20ft.

What facilities are on offer at the lake?

There is a coffee and tea available free of charge for all anglers. There is also a microwave if you would like to warm your food. There is a pub (Shepards Arms) about a 2 minute drive that offers a nice range of hot meals throughout the day.

Can I bring a friend to watch?

Yes this is allowed but they must NOT use your rod or handle any fish.

Can I upgrade my ticket?

Once you have purchased your ticket you cannot upgrade from two to three fish or three to four fish. You can purchase another ticket at the discretion of the fishery manager.

Can fish be returned?

Under no circumstances must fish returned to the lake, as we do not allow catch and release. If in doubt about the size of the fish please ask the Fishery manager.
